Most roofs through the United States are dark roofs. While these may create visual appeal and contrast to the lighter shade of the building, they can actually increase the ambient temperature of the structure. This creates heat that has to be combated with increase energy use, driving up electrical bills and reducing energy efficiency and green efforts.
A cool roof is a relatively new roofing system that creates a cooling effect in the structure. It utilizes lighter colors, reflective panels and other smart choices to ensure the roof does not absorb as much sunlight.
Most commercial buildings are in operation during the hottest parts of the day, and if they use a cool roof, that can greatly decrease their energy costs and dramatically affect the owner’s bottom line. A cool roof can be a bit of an investment, but it can pay for itself over time by plunging energy expenses and requiring less effort to keep the building cool.
